India Botswana Business and Cultural Council
About Botswana
Botswana, a landlocked country in Southern Africa, is renowned for its stable democracy, vibrant
culture, and thriving economy. With a population of approximately 2.4 million people, it boasts a
diverse landscape ranging from the Kalahari Desert in the southwest to the lush Okavango Delta in
the north.
Politically, Botswana stands out as one of Africa's most stable nations, having maintained
uninterrupted democratic governance since gaining independence from Britain in 1966. Its economy,
traditionally based on agriculture and cattle farming, has diversified significantly with the
discovery of diamonds, which now form a crucial part of its GDP. This mineral wealth has funded
extensive infrastructure development and social programs, contributing to Botswana's status as one
of Africa's wealthiest nations per capita.
Culturally, Botswana is rich with traditions of the Batswana people, who make up the majority of the
population. Their heritage is celebrated through music, dance (such as the energetic Setswana
dance, and crafts like basket weaving. The country's national language is Setswana, though English
is also widely spoken.
Tourism plays a significant role in Botswana's economy, drawn by its natural beauty and wildlife.
The Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracts visitors for its unique ecosystem
supporting a vast array of wildlife, including elephants, hippos, and numerous bird species. Other
attractions include the Chobe National Park, famous for its large elephant population, and the
Makgadikgadi Pans, offering stark, otherworldly landscapes.
